microblog. Starting a Blog is easy. Starting a Blog in 2012 is a little bit more complex. There's a Blog about anything and everything out there, right now. It's hard for someone considering a Blog to come up with a new and/or different angle. The topic can be as obscure as your brain can fathom, and odds are that a Blog covering that exact topic already exists. Pushing that further, it's somewhat hard to even define what, exactly, a Blog is in this day and age.

As adoption skyrockets, marketers are striving to optimize their use of the world’s most popular microblogging platform. Twitter came of age in 2010, growing at a scorching pace —from 75 million users at the beginning of the year to more than 190 million by the end of December. Twitter is used (officially) in 65 of the Fortune 100 companies , 63% of small to midsized businesses, and nearly half of all B2B enterprises.

Use of social networking, microblogs and other third party websites. Over time I’ve found myself doing more and more foundational work for organizations looking to dip their toes into social media. One of the key elements of this work, in my opinion, is creating a social media policy that fits well with the organization’s goals, culture and risk tolerance. But where to start?

Unfortunately when combining that content back into this site due to the decision to stop having a dedicated microblogging site which was increasingly rarely updated, I forgot the small matter of redirecting the RSS feed to the most appropriate place. And when I was in the midst of doing it, I managed to redirect it to the full feed from here, rather than just posts covering microblogging, and obviously Feedburner just picked up the last 10 posts I made and pumped them all out at once.

It’s the interconnected nature of today’s social networks like Facebook or microblogs like Twitter and the way they broadcast their messages to the world but also in the process creating permanent search friendly records that make them so powerful and also potentially dangerous. It used to be said that any publicity is good publicity. Now the same could be said about social media – any mention of your brand is good in social media but that’s not entirely correct! Let me explain ….

Before the age of social media, marketers had to create a content which was one-sided and company-centric but now with microblogging and citizen journalism, consumers can review the brand and connect with a whole lot of consumer base themselves. Gone are the days when social media platforms were just a means of socializing and a virtual school reunion.

Twitter ain’t going anywhere -From cars that tweet , to marketers figuring out newfound ways to leverage the power of microblogging and actually driving awareness and making money-Twitter is hitting some good times. Should we be amazed anymore at how fast digital is moving? Honestly no. But what should we be thinking about as we watch it go by? When I was a kid and I would see a train go by, I always wanted to be on that train.

But…what would happen if you put that team on Heinz Field and gave them all the same amenities as the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Networks, apps, aggregators, blogs, microblogs-copy what works, tweak it a little, or not, and see what market share you can pull. It’s not just social media. Create a killer product, expect knock-offs. I used to say that you truly haven’t made it until you have been knocked off. It happens with consumer products, food products, you name it. Imitation is the best form of flattery right? Monopolies in social media? Facebook has an argument, but that’s about it.

Blogs were by far the most used social media tool (I’ll avoid the discussion on whether a blog is a publishing platform or a social media tool – or both), but microblogging and social networking sites also had significant usage: Social networking sites like LinkedIn and Facebook were particularly utilized by journalists writing for websites (71%) as opposed to print magazines (61%) or newspapers (49%). A similar difference exists for microblogging sites like Twitter.
