One of my favorite examples of this application is the Converse Domaination effort (it’s worth the watch, go ahead, I’ll wait). Understanding the Community. Understanding the needs, attitudes and behaviors of the community a digital player is trying to reach or interact with is a fundamental key to being relevant.

Oxfam has made the use of social media an integrated part of their digital strategy based on the opportunities they present in terms of: immediacy, talking with a number of voices, content and community. These were all put into good use, when the horrible earthquake hit Haiti in the beginning of the year. The results.

One of the things I did to build engagement was to start a Flickr group. I also set up an area of the Flickr group where people could submit tips for me to include in future blog posts. (I At this point Digital Photography had been running for a couple of years, and there was a real sense of community and engagement on the blog.
