The Difference Between Experts and Expertise

Waxing UnLyrical

“How do you become a social media expert?” That was one of the questions I was asked when I was in Lincoln, Neb., last week. I was speaking to several students at UNL, and while I didn’t get a chance to speak to each of them one-on-one, I could tell that they are serious about being the best professional communicators they can be (this was at the College of Journalism & Mass Communications).

Confused About Facebook Changes? (Free Webinar)

Almost Savvy

While it may seem that David Bowie is referring to Facebook when he sings, “Ch, ch, ch, ch, changes.” I’m pretty sure he had something else in mind. Still, the lyrics do include “Turn and face the strain,” which may be how you’re feeling each time you visit the site. The good new is that you’re not alone. I’ve been inundated with questions like, “How do I…?

It’s Just Social Media. Don’t Freak Out.

Waxing UnLyrical

If you are reading this blog, chances are you don’t need to be told about the merits of social media. It is ubiquitous. Most of the advice we received from early adopters years ago is hardwired into our brains: Listen first! Respect people’s time! Offer something that is relevant and valuable! Measure! Measure! Measure! This isn’t anything new. These are tactics you would apply to customer/client relations even if you worked in an old-time general store selling beans out of a bin.

Twitter Direct Messages Are Useless

Jason Yormark

I want to be able to use DMs in Twitter, but really it’s such a vast wasteland of spam that it’s practically impossible to do. While I have a column for my DMs setup in Hootsuite, it’s really just for the rare chance that I may actually catch a legitimate message here and there. And even that is highly unlikely. What I fail to understand is that after years of being in existence, how is it that Twitter has failed to deliver absolutely nothing in the form of spam control or filtering for DMs.

Why Netflix Should Keep Qwikster

Netflix announced yesterday that it would end Qwikster, the company it spawned last month to handle its mail-order DVD service from its streaming service (splitting those apart happened over the summer). Productivity is like a drug. There’s something deeply satisfying about looking at a to-do list and seeing a bunch of checks in boxes. It’s like legal work place approved crack. Like any good addict I do what I can to get my fix as often as possible and use what ever tools I can to get that fix. Though instead of a crack pipe or heroin spoon I use Evernote, Xobni, WiseStamp, Delicious, and Bitly.
