I’m taking two seminar courses at school this term, and they each resemble a particular form of social media. A seminar is different from a regular course in that it necessarily involves interaction with the students — a seminar is to a regular lecture course as web 2.0 is to web 1.0.

Smaller companies could succeed with this method by marketing — verbally or through their website — to groups of devout followers and keeping their Twitter streams current (offering a daily deal or frequent deals that encourage customers to seek out discounts and sales). For those who are cautious about sharing too much, Facebook allow you to put specific rules in place, such as a Limited Profile, but I personally think it’s very interesting to see into the lives of my friends, whether it be a new hobby, a breakup (or an engagement announcement!), or the desire to establish a new group.

When you have a group of people submitting their work, there is an awareness that it isn’t just one idea that will work, so the result is a higher quality of work. Crowdsourcing is an useful model because it can be used by any group for any reason. It also allows you to share your bookmarks on other social networking sites.
