The answer…There is a notification when someone is added to the group (such as: Dave Smith added Lucy Keepawayfromme) and, if you see that someone is added who shouldn’t be, an admin can then remove them. This notification appears only in the stream on the group page and quickly floats away as new content is posted.

The original idea behind them was to let family or other intimate groups of individuals share very private content without exposing it to their larger Facebook friend communities. The function is easy to use and is a great way to improve communication among group members and still keep important or sensitive information private.

With Mark Zuckerberg being named the Time Person of the Year for 2010, you would think that there would be a little more thought that goes into the company's approach to privacy, major UI changes, and how those are communicated to the very people those changes affect. He managed to leave the group , but not before the damage was done.
