And worst of all, when recommendation is made, suggesting that these shortfalls on the primary site should be corrected first and foremost, it’s quickly brushed aside as too expensive, cumbersome, or simply not exciting enough when compared to the oncoming, external social media blitz. Still not sure how to take action on this rule of thumb?

Just do it while giving back to the community as well. Have you read The New Community Rules ? Some advice I give to my Social Media students is to be careful following the example of some large brands who are relatively new to Social Media but seem to be successful. Want to self promote? Engage in dialogue.

For example, guest blogging used to be very effective, but now that a lot of people are doing it and talking about it, it’s no longer as effective as it used to be. A great example of an effective secret blogging club is the DailyBlogTips Retweet Club by Daniel Scocco. Social blogmarking sites. Ning communities.

StumbleUpon: The Funny, the Informational, but Not So Newsy StumbleUpon is probably the last social site that I’d consider going for “news&# — at least not for “current events.&# For example, just the other day I stumbled upon an Apple press release from 2003. Sorry, guys, it’s five years later.
