In short, what they do is act as a platform that aggregates all your types of media (both new media and social media) to create a very different type of experience than say a standard community. So that means they integrate things like blogs, podcasts, wikis, forums into a “Hive†(one could say mashup here).

Facebook and Twitter are some of the main outlets for social media, but there are numerous types of social media like blogs, wikis, forums, chat rooms, etc. More and more businesses are getting into social media – an umbrella term that covers various activities that help bring about social interaction on the internet.

In other words, they aggregated all of the question and answer sites’ content into one large database. Answers and Wiki Answers , but the answers are coming from web pages that they have in their normal search database: like commercial websites.

However, I was able to aggregate many of the pieces I had coming into the course as my students worked on the class project: an online conference on nanotechnology.
