In looking at syndicated content on Yahoo News, most of the syndicated articles do not include attribution links (each news source likely has to request or provide them), but among those that do exist there is a problem. The Yahoo attribution links do not point directly to the original article URLs.

However from an SEO perspective there is a downside, as syndication creates duplicate content issues. Search engines don’t want to show users multiple versions of the same content, so when an article has been syndicated it’s likely that one version will be given prominence – and that may or may not be the original.

For traditional publishers, link building typically falls within the third main bucket of a comprehensive SEO program, which includes technical, editorial and marketing initiatives. However there are plenty of benefits to link development beyond SEO, in particular driving traffic, increasing awareness and building audience.

Like it or not, taking a preemptive approach against Panda and other forms of algorithmic filtering has become a fundamental part of SEO. Many are moving to setups in which the full content is accessible on the main page and that is the only URL that can be indexed. Hopefully this will help others to avoid a similar fate.

Social technologies make syndication and aggregation simple. You can easily kill multiple birds with one stone - automate your blog posts out on Twitter, which in turn sends your tweets to Facebook - but its important to not overdo it and run the risk of becoming a robot. Facebook HAS Twitter as part of their inherent integration!
