Over-zealously can seem spammy; and users don’t take kindly to their feed being clogged up with un-relenting gibberish. You’d be surprised just how many users ruthlessly cull people from their feed simply for not following back. Link to your Twitter feed on your other social profiles. Choose a good avatar.

With all the wonderful feedback on my guest post about how we utilize WordPress multisite and discussion forums to build community for our rather niche market, I thought I might offer some detail about specific tactics and network plugins we use to keep members informed, active and increasing in number. Here’s how we did it.

And its success would not be possible without a few things that make the community what it has become: WordPress Multisite, discussion forums, and social networking. Forums create discussion. We decided to create discussion forums so members could answer each other’s questions directly. Ebooks, podcasts, and more.

The more likes and diverse comments you get on an update, the more homepages it is shown on, so try to ask engaging questions that get people involved. Use it to engage your audience (on a Fan Page) with questions, contests, photo and video sharing and sharing relevant content that makes people want to keep coming back to your page.

Whereas Digg content used to be driven by user submissions, now, publishers automatically submit articles via RSS feed, from whence they get Diggs up — the unit of social currency that determines what content makes it to the site’s front page — primarily from their “followers,” the users who subscribe to their feeds. Good question!
