At Ignite Social Media, everyone is an expert in social media marketing. We eat, breathe, and live social media. But what may surprise you is how the various individuals at Ignite utilize social media in their everyday lives. Someone working on the analytics team could be using social media in a far different way than someone working all day as a community manager. I’ve been thinking a lot about how people use social networks and why. We have talked a lot about digital natives, immigrants, early adopters, lurkers and what not, but there is another group I’ve been tinkering with that I can easily add to the mix. The newbie in social media might think, and somewhat accurately I might add, that it’s easy to just dive right into social and worry about the big stuff later.

But focusing on the Extrovert angle for a second, I began to wonder if you need to be an extrovert to be in social media. Certainly internally in your organization you need to be an extrovert if you want to organize a Tribe or movement in your company to take on social media. And for sure you need to be an extrovert if you plan on becoming a proclaimed social media expert or guru. I wonder if this spectrum from Introvert to Extrovert will play it’s way out on Social Media.

First, I’m going to do the possibly douchey thing of quoting myself, primarily to provide context for this post (I don’t want to assume you read last week’s post): The reason social advertising is becoming so successful is that people are consuming and sharing content, significantly via mobile devices, and significantly via social networks, now more than ever before. Then social really started coming into its own.

cue thunder clap, spooky organ music] It’s a term that entered buzzword territory not long ago, as every social network and some of the most popular apps employ them in one way or another, but it is a simple enough concept that gets blamed for way more than it deserves to be. From a social perspective at least, you should think twice before taking it at face value when the term gets dropped in your next meeting as “the reason our content is underperforming.”
