You can build all the links you want, but if your website isn’t optimized, Googlebot won’t be able to crawl the site properly. Over the past several years, Google and Bing have released guidelines for webmasters to make websites more crawlable. Even having two pages on the same site with duplicate content will get your site penalized.

While it’s good news that Google is continuing to improve its ability to deal with JavaScript, this change also impacts the way that many publishers display sponsored links on their sites. In February of 2011, Google released the Panda update that took rankings away from websites with low-quality content and sites with more advertising than content. Links can do this regardless of whether or not they contain the “nofollow” attribute, contain redirects, come from a site with a high PageRank , and so on.

I like to focus on building search engine traffic to my sites because once you have rankings you can usually sustain them with little effort and the traffic they send is very targeted. Some success is from sites I purchased which were ranking on the first few pages of Google and I built some great links to get them on the first page.
