What Google doesn’t want is for those links to have SEO value, which is why their guidelines dictate that paid links are coded in a way that they will not pass PageRank. Previously, sponsored links in JavaScript such as those in the example above could not be read by crawlers and thus were in compliance with Google’s guidelines.

As I covered in SEO Guidelines for Sponsored Content and Partner Links , there are SEO implications to be aware of. Since Outbrain links are paid links, its modules comply with search engine guidelines and do not pass SEO value (a good thing as this protects the participating publishers). So it is a vehicle for link development too.

Penguin, announced in April 2012, decreased search visibility of websites that participated in black-hat SEO, keyword stuffing, cloaking, link schemes , duplicate content, and other activities that violated Google Webmaster Guidelines. If the blog has guest post guidelines, be sure to follow those in your submission.

We allow links in the comments, but we nofollow them so no link juice escapes. Kimberly Turner’s Monthly Trends + 10 Tips for a Flawless Linking Strategy touches on the subject, for example.
