Twitter as a tool to communicate during conferences. After attending SMX (I’ll post something on that soon) and SES NY, I realized that Twitter is a useful tool for conferencegoers to communicate their whereabouts or to share breaking news and announcements. If you just want top news, CNN Breaking News works quite well.

One of the ways that Twitter has been used (other than listed above) has been by conferences like South by Southwest (SXSW) and Gnomedex. The best way to use it is create a hashtag, explain what you are trying to accomplish, and have your followers tweet away. Facebook Create a Facebook Page and tell everyone about it.

That’s why there are “do not call&# lists and anti-spam software. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have sat next to you, Tamar, at enough search industry conferences to know you don’t blog about plants. But what can save bloggers from getting unwanted — and irrelevant — pitches? Let’s do it!

Especially in comparison to many other communication programs like traditional PR, TV advertising, outdoor advertising and others, social media actually offers pretty solid metrics. Many social media software packages (great ebook analysis of them here) can provide highly detailed reports on the impact of social media programs.

I actually had a client call me out on stage once, in front of like 800 people at a conference, in an attempt to pay me a compliment.
