Rather than paying rapt attention to the number of Twitter followers you’ve corralled, instead look at your Klout score. Klout is an online influence gauge that combines several data points (followers, retweets, clicks on links, etc.) Should you care more about Digg submission than about comments? Search Volume.

For those accustomed to getting stratospheric scores on standardized tests, Klout can seem a bit harsh. A realtime social search engine that pulls current and recent results for any term from Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz, Digg and Delicious. Don’t want to follow Twitterers who aren’t following you?

While these are useful ways to gather marketing and demographic data , you still need to know what people are saying behind closed doors.
