For example, creating a large extended footer with links to every site in your network, with anchor text that is clearly for SEO, is not the way to go. In some cases like Yahoo, the links within syndicated content are nofollow (and they often point to Yahoo tracking URLs with 302 redirects) and thus do not pass SEO value.

Previously, sponsored links in JavaScript such as those in the example above could not be read by crawlers and thus were in compliance with Google’s guidelines. What Google doesn’t want is for those links to have SEO value, which is why their guidelines dictate that paid links are coded in a way that they will not pass PageRank.

Li comes down a bit hard on PR agencies; true, most of them are ham-handed when it comes to social media, mass-blasting out press releases to bloggers (Li offers an excellent guide to conducting blogger outreach the right way in chapter 11) and generally treating social media like a broadcast channel.

An addition in Google spread sheet is of “contact examples” wherein the user can upload images of email examples set out to webmasters you are associated with. For example, if you are updating an article about a particular sport on some sports web portal it will attract the targeted audience and will not spam the web portal.
