What Google doesn’t want is for those links to have SEO value, which is why their guidelines dictate that paid links are coded in a way that they will not pass PageRank. Previously, sponsored links in JavaScript such as those in the example above could not be read by crawlers and thus were in compliance with Google’s guidelines.

To quickly determine if a link is dofollow or nofollow, you can install the Chrome Nofollow extension, which will highlight all nofollow links.

I was at the FinCon Conference where I did the opening keynote and had an absolute ball. Really great conference, very good community. To state it most simply, a style guide is where you put into writing the guidelines for how you want your blog to be written and presented. I have a brand style guide and a writing style guide.

Bloggers who are compensated can use the “nofollow&# tag within their outbound links to keep those links from being tagged by Google as paid content. The nofollow may well make that harder, but then again, if you are under contract I think it’s the buyer’s responsibility to track the postings of the paid blogger.

The guidelines are not mandatory at this point tho they do clearly explain several best practices. What a wonderful conference! There’s no SEO value to these comments (they’re nofollowed by default), and all this approach does is makes you lose credibility in the eyes of the blogger. Tamar’s tips provides a superb guideline. My analogy for twitter is the people you can meet walking around at a conference intermission.
