As I covered in SEO Guidelines for Sponsored Content and Partner Links , there are SEO implications to be aware of. Since Outbrain links are paid links, its modules comply with search engine guidelines and do not pass SEO value (a good thing as this protects the participating publishers). Smart syndication. Penguin, announced in April 2012, decreased search visibility of websites that participated in black-hat SEO, keyword stuffing, cloaking, link schemes , duplicate content, and other activities that violated Google Webmaster Guidelines. To its credit, Google also penalized its own Japan division who used the pay per post tactic in an attempt to compete against Yahoo. Nofollow links also matter. Some links, for example, the ones from blog comments may have the rel=”nofollow” attribute. <a <a rel=”nofollow” href=” [link] “>Example of nofollow link</a> Any paid links must have the rel=”nofollow” attribute to comply with Google’s guidelines.
