With its incredible growth (200 million to 400 million users in the last 12 months), and announcement at its April 21 F8 developer conference of new capabilities, Facebook seems to have become, as Chris O’Brien of the San Jose Mercury News says, “the most important company on the Web.”. All of this raises interesting privacy concerns.

Online social networking continues to change and evolve. The latest news is all about Google + (you can read some of my initial thoughts about the platform right here: Co-dependency In The Age of Facebook ). Google + lets you be selectively social. It's a different kind of "social."

Facebook has always had one strength that no other social network (other than perhaps FriendFeed ) has seemed to fully get: The fact that you could add friends to lists, and target your updates so only those lists, and specific people you chose, can see the updates you post. With Facebook, the friendship is always 2-way.

Social network analysis has been a part of social media analysis ( not the same thing ) for a long time, but it hasn't been central to the social media discussion lately. Follower/following Twitter follow connections are probably weaker than other social network connections, but these connections are mostly public.

It's hard to imagine that there is a Facebook killer somewhere around the next tech innovation, but there probably is. Facebook's entire purpose has been to get to this moment. They've already been rumored to be working on a much stronger mobile strategy, bringing Facebook's powerful platform to the apps you use on the mobile devices you carry, to every place you go. However, it seems in one fell swoop Google just beat Facebook to their own game.
