Great question which I found myself asking last night after I reviewed my recent Myers Briggs score. The 1-9-90 theory that says out of every hundred people who join a community or network – 1% actively contribute – 9% contribute from time to time – and 90% are lurkers. I found it interesting that my score came in as ENTJ.

Isn’t that how social networking works? I extend the question to you: If you knew someone was in the same location as you because you both used a smartphone app and the app told you that fact, would you approach the stranger and say hi? They have an audience, fan base, community and customers who enjoy communicating on platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, LinkedIn or Instagram with and about the brand. WHY should your audience care that you are on Facebook or any other social network? I want you to think about this question long and hard.

A quick overview of the VW community is that Volkswagen does not operate their own social network. All of these social networks are managed independently from each other by home grown admins. While my definition of a friend has changed since joining the social networking site in 2005, the core remains the same: Friends are people who I know in the flesh, share an interest or two, and consider socially compatible.
