2012 Google I/O - Is This the 2007 Facebook F8?

As the first Google I/O with the Google+ Team, and a serious read/write API yet to launch, I predict we are about to see an explosion of social apps at a level we haven't seen since Facebook's F8 Conference in 2007 when they launched their platform to the world. Let's look first at the original APIs for both. Some may not be aware of this, but previous to Facebook's 2007 F8 conference, they too had an API very similar to the state of Google+'s API today.

Facebook's Need for Consistency in the Competition With Google

Ask Kevin Marks , Google's former OpenSocial and Friend Connect (APIs for building Google apps) lead who tried to integrate Facebook Connect (as it was called at the time) with Google's Friend Connect universal login. Facebook allowed Youtube's Facebook integration, but denied that of Friend Connect, citing claims to the way they were accessing the API, and being unwilling to work with Google on the way they were accessing Facebook.

OpenSocial Support. Wordpress has plugins, but Google uses the standardized OpenSocial API , along with Google Gadgets , to provide an interface to Widgets and other features within the blog. To code a customized feature, I just need to know a little OpenSocial (which works with many other sites), and boom! I mentioned OpenSocial and Gadgets as an advantage, but if you are used to the custom Wordpress install, there is still a lot you cannot do on Blogger.
