The effective practice of social media marketing requires monitoring all channels, from online cruise message boards to social networking sites like Facebook or LinkedIn. I have seen these programs work but I sometimes wonder if it’s worth all the effort considering the possible fall-out, as seen in your example.

I got hooked on the Star Tribune Twolves message board in 2002 and haven’t looked back. Although I don’t post very much at all these days, I still read the threads on Twolvescentral.com (Star Tribune kind of killed the boards) on my iPhone every day. link] Jan_B @jaybaer is on a roll this week!

I know that there are some real risks to this approach as well – hoaxes would seem to be that much easier to pull off, for example. For example, don’t sit and preach about the virtues of your product when they come looking for tech support. Don’t force them to visit your Facebook page when they hang out on a forum or message board. When it comes to business you need to connect on the same level as your customers. Also, meet them where they’re at.

There are some elements of Disqus I don’t like, especially that it doesn’t always play nice with other plug-ins, but it does make commenting easier and faster for most of you who already have a Disqus account.

The huge growth of online sites like Youtube, Twitter and Facebook, which have the potential to give anyone a large audience are a great example of this in action. Before I continue, I want to say that I don’t think of myself as an A-Lister, but the following example is relevant.
