While community is a hot buzz word these days, it’s still quite a ways before most businesses truly embrace the idea. Companies like Starbucks , Dell , even my previous employer Microsoft Advertising , all do community incredibly well and it has paid off for all of them many times over.

This year, colleague Cheryl Burgess and I changed things up a bit, opening the award to nominations but focusing specifically on outstanding men and women who work for technology companies and are active on social media. As with this year, we will be asking our community to nominate their favorite leaders in this field.

Just recently, for instance, USA Today reported that Microsoft issued a security upgrade for Internet Explorer. The problem is, Microsoft fixes one security issue only to be confronted with another one in just a few weeks. It’s a never-ending cycle for Microsoft and Internet Explorer.

I have literally copied the G&S description in Microsoft Word to check the word count, and it is 32 pages long and 16,728 words total. To give you an idea of what is typical for a trademark application, I would say that they “typical” description of goods and services is usually a few sentences, or a paragraph at best.

Think of an agency as a software package, like Microsoft Office. Contrast that with newer open-source web-based software services like OpenOffice. Clients will begin to notice too, and they’ll begin to see that your agency is evolving out of the Microsoft Office mindset and adapting an open approach to innovation.

It’s my favorite CMS and blogging platform, primarily because of the fact that the community of developers who make themes and plugins for WordPress are amazing. Sometimes, the open source nature of the CMS can introduce bugs or incompatibilities that can cause errors or even bring an entire site down. NOT Microsoft Paint.
