Unfortunately, there are simply not enough Jonathans in the world who explictly respond to the PR “pro&# to let them know that their behavior won’t win them any influential friends in the blogosphere. After all, there are more folks receptive to the freebies than those who feel the need to stand up to these spammers.

Industry colleagues are those I have met in person (typically in a casual atmosphere or at conferences). Social media connections are those I know through a variety of online forums, the blogosphere, Twitter, and the like (but I generally don’t befriend someone immediately; I still give it time).

RCCL’s own words at that conference tells the tale: Hannock noted, “The key to success in viral marketing is to subtly influence the influencers without them overtly realizing they are being influenced.” I could not say what the timing was without researching the dates of the conference.

Many of them (more than half) were individuals I met at search conferences, but other conferences (SXSW, events that Mashable was involved in in the capacity of host or media sponsor, and the first IZEAFest) also represented my Industry connections. The chart above illustrates the breakdown of the “social media&# friends.

I don’t necessarily expect to meet with those folks immediately; often, these powerful relationships are formed online, and I then try to learn what I can about the blogger himself/herself and follow up, normally at a conference or industry event. But sometimes there are surprises in every single meeting.

You need to network with like minded individuals and build relationships with people in the blogosphere so that you ultimately get inbound links, comments, and visibility. I think something people so often forget is that social media can be permanent. Boy, those conferences must be a lot of back-slapping and link-baiting, no?
