Unfortunately many social media sites add a “nofollow” attribute to any links within user generated content. Related posts: My Top 10 Posts of 2009 on News Media, SEO and Social Media. My Top Posts of 2011 on SEO, PR and Social Media for Publishers. Fortunately a good deal of social activity revolves around sharing links.

And yes, you need a mixture of both Dofollow and Nofollow links, because that’s what natural link building looks like.

I still feel though that the search results from 2011 and 2012 are just far better than what we’ve seen in 2013. Should we include the rel=”nofollow” by default? Trying to defend yourself against thousands (millions?) of people who are focused on nothing more than gaming their system on a daily basis.

In February of 2011, Google released the Panda update that took rankings away from websites with low-quality content and sites with more advertising than content. Links can do this regardless of whether or not they contain the “nofollow” attribute, contain redirects, come from a site with a high PageRank , and so on.

Over two years ago now, back in December 2011, Joost de Valk a.k.a Some of the biggest search blogs on the web covered the news of their demise. My site is new so nobody is linking to me or others anyway. Mostly nofollow and those that are dofollow are spammed to hell. GoDaddy Makes Google Their B h (Again).
