[Retail] Samsung and the dangers of the tech hardware business
The pricing model in the UK, where the price is amortised over the course of a two year contract, serves to disguise this, but a new handset generally retails outside of a contract at over £300. So recently the feted poster girl for consumer tech hardware, this month Samsung posted a profit warning triggered primarily by a decline in sales of its flagship Galaxy smartphones. Forecasts of doom were swift. Strong words, but given the history of the technology hardware market this is all in no way surprising. Samsung’s mobile trouble has more to do with operating systems. Happy days.

The award that I was most proud over the years was that our little team at Vistaprint (Jason Keith, Nick Gosselin and I) ranked above companies like Nike in Internet Retailer’s list of Social Media Impact. Eight years, one month and 13 days ago, I walked into Vistaprint to take on a role as an associate manager on the company’s PR team. Taking the job, I thought that it would be something that would help me transition out of the sports world and get into more of a stable PR role. Little did we know that the community would be against it and ask us to change our approach.

Retail software prices are often eyebrow-raisingly high, and for the most part, inflexible. These prices are no doubt in line with professionals who require the software to live, but for more casual users, who might interact with the software infrequently, paying full retail price seems exorbitant. Every couple years, it's not uncommon for our family to shell out $150 to $500 for the latest Microsoft Office Suite. The full Adobe Creative Suite will set you back almost $2,000, and upgrades are $600. The home edition of Mathematica is about $300. It's early days.
