Somewhere along the line, the word was applied to images shared, captioned, and remixed online. This meme creation site offers interesting templates along with tools for creating animated gifs and motivational posters. It doesn’t hurt to incentivize with prizes, but lots of people will participate just for the fun of it.

Say you want to insert a quote that is written incorrectly in its original form (whether by design or by mistake) but you do not want your readers to think that you are the source of the mistake.
