Welcome Direct Messages are both a useful tool and the bane of the Twitter existence. I tried their paid service and I just felt that that overall, the services were clunky and in some cases, redundant to tools I like better. For those services, I use and suggest SocialOomph. Some are free, some are part of their paid service.

It isn’t that we need a tool that does everything. Its that we need a tool that does what it does really well. As a blogger, there are numerous tools at your disposal to track how your content is doing. Overall, I like PostRank, its a relatively new tool so I suspect that they will continue to improve.

For businesses, I can see this being a good tool for an at-a-glance weekly review of social postings. Though tools like Twitalyzer offer services that are better at extrapolating the information and putting it into context over the long term. Both individuals and businesses can use Trunk.ly.

Unlike a Twitter stream, these curation tools offer a way to collect a lot of information in a single place. Storify is another Twitter curation tool and a story-teller’s dream. Twylah is another curation tool that has a great lay out, that’s easy to read. I do wish that I could add my Paper.li

You do have to “unfollow” one at a time, but its still a handy tool if you’ve reached that mysterious Twitter ratio of followers vs. followed. While this is an addictive tool, its also hard to bring it back to an actual business objective. And what feature are these types of tools most missing?

There also isn’t direct advertising on Google+, though there IS a handy search tool called “Sparks , but its completely organic without any advertising. Its in the hands of the people – its the ultimate intersection of social media: the blending of digital tools and humans. Will that change? I don’t know.

Sure, you’re processes should scale, your tools should scale, but the communication itself? Fundamentally, I reject the idea that just because social media occupies the space between mass media and 1:1 communication that it has to be scaled. I mean, how many meetings do you go to a week?

I think used to think engagement was a great measurement tool. When something’s interesting, people say so. When its not, well – they ignore it. Its that simple (or that complicated). When I engage (click, share or comment) its because I think the information has been worth my time and I want my audience to see it.

Social media is popular because there is potential for building a community, but simply participating in social media does not inherently give you a community. Events have the potential to create community, but simply attending or hosting an event does not create community either.
