As someone that previously worked at an internet marketing company, I was always amused when a client would become obsessed with their Facebook or Myspace profile (yes, this was a few years back) and ask us to dedicate an unreasonable amount of resources to managing it. Plastic surgeons get it.

It should be the guiding force behind your decisions because it’s what your company stands for. When was the last time you looked at your company’s mission statement? You probably did this when building the business plan for your company and now is the time to revisit it. Do you have a mission statement?

People are much more engaged by, interested in, and willing to communicate with the product social properties than the company social properties. My theory on this is that we have a deeper connection with the products a company makes, because we physically use them, than the company that makes them.

I didn’t realize exactly how important culture was to me in a company until I started working somewhere that valued it. I think this is where a lot of their strength as a company comes from, and where companies in the future will gain their strength. It’s been a great week culturally.

They seem to have a tight knit team of folks who like what they do and the company they work for. I like the people I have met and appreciate that a good portion of the interview was about how / if I would fit in with the others already working there. It’s exciting to see and I’m excited for my first day.

Now, you would think that a company so concerned with ethics that it’s part of their landing flash animation wouldn’t be ripping off the logos of well known companies. Well in your company you probably have people who represent the company in many ways. The good news is that they didn’t.

Do you think the hosting companies who supply the bandwidth for the Instagram servers are just giving it to them for free? Do you think the engineers who make updates and keep the system running work for free? Without money Instagram disappears. Without money everything you love about the service goes away.

One where a company measures it’s success not in just dollars and cents but in employee happiness and internal communication? I’ve even seen an opening or two for a VP of Social Media and one CSMO (Chief Social Media Officer). How far away is the CCO or CCCO?

The goal is to associate the company with it’s services and offerings. People are often weary of materials coming directly from the company so if you have any 3rd party reviews you can link to and share that is ideal. Using social media in a brand marketing campaign can help make your brand more tangible.

Tony Hsieh could have written a very boring book about his company, but instead he wrote a very interesting and compelling story (aff) about the struggle to start (and then save) Zappos. . “Boring” products or “boring” business stories are a tough thing to overcome sometimes.

More companies should look at this approach and take note. It’s nice to see some companies working to get their HR, and application process in line with how things are changing online, but from my current experience I can tell you it’s still a far way from where it should be. That’s it.

This is the sweet spot for most companies because you have complete control and you don’t need to outsource your content to an agency of 3rd party. This is the option taken when you have an internal person or team who can handle the content creation and they have the time to create the necessary content.

If you or your company is running a PPC campaign then you should have a list of keywords you’re bidding on and have a core set that are the most valuable to you. I'm a little skeptic because I know how incredibly annoying it can be sometimes when companies search for keywords in my tweets and then follow me based on that.

The strategy of becoming a more social company is clearly working; 87% of people report Liking or friending a brand on Facebook. They want people to “Like” them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. Brands want to socialize, share a laugh, hangout, join a Group and even have a conversation.

When first wading into social media, brands tend to only play in the bottom 1 or 2 sections, but as progress is shown and the company and marketers get more familiar with it they begin adding the other layers on.
