First, I’m going to say kudos to Apple for trying involve themselves in the world of social media. Let’s envision this scenario: a user has a support issue about an Apple product. Apple has no such protocol in place, and at this point, there is no engagement. I’m going to stop there, though.

If you use Twitter regularly, you’d see that it wins as a social news site that provides instantaneous news — at least of that caliber. As Chris Garrett explains in his post, if you follow numerous feed bots, you can get the news all the time. The right news will hit the front page of Digg quickly.

Once online, it caught the attention of executives at Apple who flew him into California to make it a commercial reality. It’s really mostly about chance, and like I mentioned earlier in the comments, luck and timing. Would you have known that it was created by an 18-year-old student in his spare time? It also depends on goals.

That story hit the front page of Reddit and on Digg , and 67 people voted on my comment : Props to Reddit for visibly interacting with the community it serves. Beyond the cool factor, Reddit is easily getting new users by paying attention to its user base and even creating surprises when not even necessary.
