It’s Good to be Negative One thing that drives me nuts.
One thing that drives me nuts about a lot of social media fanatics is that there is an overwhelming drive to always be positive.  It’s Good to be Negative. Poor folks like me, who are inherently depressive and negative, get shut out of the space as “Debbie Downers.”. It’s OK to be negative.  Be critical.  Point out the flaws.  Show your misgivings. Things get better when multiple points of view are shared, and sometimes you need to have the view that the world is a festering hellhole to make things better. Just don’t be a total asshole when you do it.

    Networking Events
Social Media events are such weird happenings.  I’m heading off to Raleigh #MediaLeaders tonight.  I go to networking events because I feel the best way to connect with my readers is to meet them in person.  Sure we have a lot of fun here, but text only conveys a small portion of my insanity.  Also, I’m going to find new readers.  It’s a win win for everyone. You inevitably know people because you have followed them for a while, but at the same time, you don’t know how crazy or depressing they are in person.  Readers, what do you like or hate about networking events?

Come see me at Recruit Camp
Once again, the powers that be decided that I will speak to the masses about the Anti-Social Media Movement.  Tags: Recruitcamp Anti-Social Media Live I’ll be heading down the street to the Quintiles World Headquarters to speak at #RecruitCamp. When this opportunity crossed my plate, I immediately stopped, and started jumping up and down.  Granted, the people in the Wendy’s parking lot stared for a while and the man in the pink shirt bouncing around, but I don’t care what they tweet about me.

    How to Blog Infrequently
Infrequency is the way I am taking control of The Anti-Social Media.  The Anti-Social Media will be no different. I’m cutting down on blogging. It’s not that I don’t like you all, but my post quality is suffering from me trying to have a real life with family, friends, and a day job.  When I sit down to write, it’s usually after midnight and my eyes are weary from the day.  Competent, humorous thoughts just don’t exist in that state, with the exception of the weird things I do when half asleep, like eat cheerios with a fork or try to eat coffee grounds. Anyways….

Why is Steve Jobs trying to convince us that iPhone ads are a good thing?
I didn’t think it would be appropriate for me to write a whole rant about the topic since iPhones and iAds aren’t social media, so go read Manjoo’s article and get angry that Apple thinks it’s OK to start building ads into their OS. Why is Steve Jobs trying to convince us that iPhone ads are a good thing? This Slate article by Farhad Manjoo sums up a lot of my anger and concerns with iAds.  While I realize that not everyone uses an iPhone or iPod touch, the “feature” of iAds within an OS is creepy and evil.

    Social Media Burnout.
It’s funny how I started the week feeling burned out about blogging and social media.  Don’t let it ruin your social media. However, the awkward tweets, the mindless check-ins, the technical nightmare of running a blog really resonated with a lot of readers this week, meaning one thing: You all are really burned out as well. The more I think about it though, it doesn’t come as a surprise.  How many tweets can we possibly read in a day?  What do you do with those 200 some articles that come into your RSS reader daily?  You can’t do it.  Burnout will come.

Social Media @ Work: Talking about Work
I like to follow the first two rules of Fight Club about talking about work in social media. You do not talk about work in social media. You DO NOT talk about work in social media. Tags: Social Media @ Work Well, darn Jay, those rules seem pretty harsh.  Why shouldn’t I talk about my job online? You don’t want to get dooced (though that seemed to work out very well for her in the long run).  And whatever it is you do, it probably isn’t the best idea to share any of the details about it with the rest of humanity.

#Recruitcamp and the Way We Use the Web.
I’ll be speaking on why Everything you Learn on the Internet is Wrong , and then spending the day wallowing in shame learning about how recruiters and HR personnel are using social media tools to reshape hiring processes. It’s about taking a moment to rethink the way companies hire and how people can make it better, whether through using social media tools or just getting the processes better.  It’s time we stop thinking of using social media, but why we use social media and how we can use it better.  I’m spending the day at #recruitcamp.

Overly Long and Sentimental #recruitcamp Wrap-Up
Like it or not, recruiters are on the social web.  Recruiters and HR people are looking at social media and technology for several reasons, but it comes down to finding better candidates quicker.  Really, that’s all they want from social media. They want to stay ahead of the game and they think social media has the power to do that. Mike from Jobs2Web spoke on how to build a business case behind using social media to find job candidates.  These points seem redundant to a social media maverick like myself, but they are essential.
