Stay N' Alive

As the first Google I/O with the Google+ Team, and a serious read/write API yet to launch, I predict we are about to see an explosion of social apps at a level we haven't seen since Facebook's F8 Conference in 2007 when they launched their platform to the world. Let's look first at the original APIs for both. They're in a very similar state to Facebook in 2007.

The second inflection point came when Facebook expanded API access to its ads marketplace, at first via a limited beta in 2009, and later formalized into the ads API program in August 2011. Over time, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest rolled out new marketing API programs themselves, adding dozens of additional companies to their partner programs. Is Facebook’s Social Graph Beacon 2.0?

The most far reaching announcement is the introduction of what is called the Social Graph API, a convention that allows developers (anyone with a Web site or a blog) to easily embed “Like” buttons and other functions on their sites, allowing users to “bring” their Faceboook identities wherever they go on the Web, outside of Facebook’s walled garden.
