It was mostly a read-only API, with, eventually, the ability to create widgets that could be embedded as apps on a person's Wall - a new feature of Facebook at the time. In fact, it wasn't until years after that that developers could really start integrating this data into other websites and mobile apps.

OpenSocial Support. Wordpress has plugins, but Google uses the standardized OpenSocial API , along with Google Gadgets , to provide an interface to Widgets and other features within the blog. To code a customized feature, I just need to know a little OpenSocial (which works with many other sites), and boom!

As you can see, there are little subscribe widgets near the top of the page that allow you to choose which application to invoke to add your subscription. OpenSocial. A lot of web sites will prominently display a link to their feed. You can click the thumbnail below for a better view. so it will default to that choice the next time.
