If you follow my writing, you probably know how much I love Google Reader. On July 1st, Google Reader says goodbye. Following the decision by Google to shutter Google Friend Connect , that widget will have disappeared, along with the 82 lovely people who chose to support the site via that method. But it’s reinforced my perception of how Google views social connections, and how that differs from Facebook and Twitter.

A good way to investigate this is to review the Crawl Errors report in Google Webmaster Tools, which shows URLs with 404, 500 and other errors that Google encountered while crawling the site. So maintain a decent selection of feeds and don’t let the impending shutdown of Google Reader move you away from RSS.

It can’t be a purely RSS play as we need gadgets/widgets for API only based services. about iGoogle shutting down – if Google can’t find it on the ‘net, nobody can – but I’m sure there are services nearly as good. Google Reader doesn’t have gadgets. Really grumpy !

Become a Knowledge Management Ninja with Google Reader. I have been using various RSS readers for nearly five years now - Ive tried them all. However, none matches the power of Google Reader. Some of these may work with RSS readers from Newsgator, Bloglines and others but they are written with Google in mind.).

The Huffington Post The Huffington Post has added a “Hot on Facebook” module to its home page and in a sidebar on posts: I like this and think it will do a good job of encouraging user clicks, similar to the Digg widget that has worked well on news sites. Seeing that stories have been liked thousands of times certainly caught my interest.
