According to Econsultancy’s State of Search Marketing Report 2013, 74% of companies and 82% of agencies surveyed said that social media is integrated into their SEO strategy. On the flip side of the search ranking coin, it’ worth noting that search is no longer happening solely on Google, Bing, Yahoo, and the like.

For a big company account, it’s difficult to actually engage all day long (and all week long, especially if you’re a 9-5 shop). Tweet Spinner also has a “nofollow&# user list that will algorithmically never follow users who meet certain criteria. Moreover, you can also nofollow people based on their tweets.

Good luck convincing your friends outside of search to start using Bing or Yahoo anytime soon. Should we include the rel=”nofollow” by default? And what do we have ranking number #1 for ‘SEO Company’? It’s not that in mobile we apply that any more or any less for desktop search.”

To its credit, Google also penalized its own Japan division who used the pay per post tactic in an attempt to compete against Yahoo. Bloggers who are compensated can use the “nofollow&# tag within their outbound links to keep those links from being tagged by Google as paid content.
