The people we tend to be drawn to in real life are people who pause in conversation to let you have a say, people who ask questions about you, people who have a genuine interest in what you’ve got to say. One of the simplest ways to create these ‘listening spaces’ on a blog is to ask questions.

Since these are all out of the public view, I’m sure you don’t realize how much of my time is spent answering questions. Chances are very high that if you have the problem or question, you are not the only one who would like to know the solution. Trust me, you aren’t the only one with that question.

days], I am still stuck on the question of what to do about my name. On FB, I do my best to balance things out-if someone is questionable I do hide them on my feed unless I remove them. Do use the 80-20 Rule–tweeting more engaging industry, trade news,answering client questions etc and less about me v. shameless promotion.

To get a feel for how everyone else sees this subject I asked this question on Twitter and here’s the response I got: I personally think that listening is THE most important part of ORM. Address your loyal customer / fans / friends in your network and get them to help. It will spread a whole lot faster than you doing it on your own.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Audience members are happy to reveal their motivations. They’ve become your followers for a reason. Check out how they’re interacting. Establish goals for each tool Social media tools should be used to work toward goals. It was a spring board for what i hope is more to come.

So now here’s the big question. I already mentioned in the post that I enjoyed their product (especially when compared to some of the others I’ve had during the experiment), and this was a great little bonus to the experience of their product. People often brand themselves as an expert in a field or an authority on a topic, but are careless with the way they present themselves, calling into question their expertise, and injecting doubt into the minds of potential customers. Using tools to broadcast only, without understanding that this gives your audience the impression that you’ll also be there to answer questions and reply to concerns, is tremendously short-sighted. They were not monitoring Twitter or responding to anyone who had sent them a message. In short, no.

Instead of looking for that one thing that you “should” do, you may want to take a step back and begin by asking yourself a few hard questions, such as: What have I accomplished? If you are willing to put in the time to develop a plan and learn how best to use the tools available to tell your story, you’re already ahead of the game.

Keywords and searching is where the power of Twitter comes from, use some of the efforts you’ve already put in place through other marketing methods and start integrating everywhere you can, in the end it will make things easier to manage.
