First, I’m going to say kudos to Apple for trying involve themselves in the world of social media. Let’s envision this scenario: a user has a support issue about an Apple product. Apple has no such protocol in place, and at this point, there is no engagement. I’m going to stop there, though.

Well, for one, social media users — that is, users on social news sites such as Digg, Mixx, Reddit — are not particularly enthusiastic about the proliferation of marketers in their community. This is a huge challenge for someone who wants to sell their product using social media.

How do you get your news? In the past I have variously read newspapers, watched TV news bulletins, read news.bbc.co.uk If you use Twitter regularly, you’d see that it wins as a social news site that provides instantaneous news — at least of that caliber. and obviously more recently sites such as Digg.

Facebook understands its demographics and practices smart marketing. The Apple Students Group is a great way for Apple to market its own products, and over the summer, it offered free songs through iTunes. Last year, Facebook held an NCAA tournament on its site (which was another clever marketing tactic).

It was taken the night of January 28, 2008 (approximately 11PM EST): While Digg typically allowed stories to hit the front page within 80-120 votes (the latter being more rare than normal), it’s now requiring almost double the number. After seeing how it panned out, I have to say that I’m not impressed.

I think social media customer service doesn’t scale and people who think that they will be helped quicker in the future because they can Twitter a company are not going to be happier 5 years from now. Social media customer service is a form of marketing…marketing the company as a friendly, customer-obsessed organization.
