If an editor didn''t like a story pitch, I could just copy and paste that same text into WordPress , hit "publish" and see if the story had legs. For a person like me, publishing a regular blog enabled me to build an audience, to have a direct relationship with people who liked the same sorts of things that were turning my crank.

Join Facebook groups, forums, Reddit, Quora, wherever they are, then look and listen for the most common issues. My advice, use WordPress. However, there are others: Tumblr – Easy to use and an excellent platform for social media bloggers. If you’re using WordPress, then you’ve got thousands to choose from.

Reality check: there’s more to listening than just the “usual suspects” such as Facebook and Twitter. When we talk about online social listening, we’re referring to social sites beyond “the big five” (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest). Consider the sheer popularity of sites such as YouTube, Reddit and Quora.

Remember, the more you clean up those old posts the more they will pay you back with increased search engine traffic or organic traffic from social networks like Twitter and Facebook. you need a good tool to redirect user from an out-of-date URL to a new one, check out the Redirection plugin for WordPress. What functionalities do you think WordPress, vBulletin, and other common platforms need to be able to better develop communities? What annoys you about WordPress, vBulletin, and these platforms? He’s also getting ready to launch a WordPress membership plugin. In any case, I can’t see any obvious lessons.

Oh, and if you’re interested in other types of breaking news, I also follow WordPress to know when latest updates come out. It also serves a specific purpose, while its chief competitor, Facebook, does not. That’s why I, like Eric , won’t be spamming Facebook, but I feel fine about doing so on Twitter.
