But maybe the SEO guys at StumbleUpon or Rdio or FOX news don’t realise they can do the same (or at least nofollow it for their own protection).

Most of the growth did not just come from StumbleUpon but there was a huge increase in search engine traffic as well. Although the site received more traffic than last month, a lot of it was from sources like StumbleUpon which doesn’t convert very well, so the ratio of traffic to subscribers doesn’t really match up.

I had 3 guest posts go live this month on some big blogs which obviously had an impact on the stats but apart from that, I just focus on writing the best content I can. Most StumbleUpon traffic is pretty useless in my eyes, but some of it converts in ways that I want it to. You could say that we prefer signal over noise.

Links from other sites to your site are basically a ‘vote’ that tell search engines you are trusted and you are a good resource for whatever your content is about. Write Awesome Content A few years ago you could write an awesome post and it would receive hundreds of links. Google lets you find awesome websites.

The phrase is very competitive and gets around 40,000 exact searches per month in Google so I think this shows that quality content around a topic (which attracts links) is really what Google and other search engines want to provide their audience. Awesome content! You could say that we prefer signal over noise.
