I ran a panel at the Penny Arcade Expo just over a week ago called “Community Managers: More Than Forum Monkeys&# in which we gave an (admittedly brief, as we only had 40 minutes) overview of CM in the game industry.

To me, an outside observer, they have treated it as a sales platform though positioned it as a community forum. There was a forum/blog/WOMF posting titled “Is WOMF locally owned?&# WOMF confuses itself and its audience in a number of ways: It calls discussion topics blog posts though refers to itself as a forum.

I pay a yearly fee for one forum I frequent, and I donate regularly to another. I get a lot of value from these two forums, and it’s worth it to me. If they went to a fee-based system, I’d sigh and give it up. Same thing with Facebook. I pay for my blog. I also donate to podcasters that I like.
