A client I worked with last year received a massive boost in search traffic when we removed their brand name from title tags on their blog posts. Focus On a Keyphrase Unless you’re very into branding, it’s a good idea to try to optimise your site around a keyphrase that can send you search traffic.

The top results for most keyphrases are either a Wikipedia page, a site that is very focused around community, or a clear leader in an industry. Based on this, I knew it was going to be a challenge to rank for two competitive keyphrases in my industry when I was a total nobody. SEO now is far less robotic, and far more social.

I like to use Google Trends which gives me an idea of whether an industry is becoming more popular online or if it’s declining. In fact, I used a Sony Vaio laptop that had no hard drive (really), ran from a Xubuntu Live CD, and every time it booted up I would be presented with a brand new operating system. No problem.

Delcious Popular Page Similar to StumbleUpon, Delicious has it’s own popular page which you can sort by tags which are related to your industry. Needless to say, the type of actions they promote may get you some traffic, but it will be fleeting and not something you could build a reputable brand with. And, unless you can find a great writer who knows the industry well, it can be expensive (both financially and in time) to keep them making a consistent income. The traffic is coming from Google so the brand obviously has some strength, but that could very easily die down as the site is fairly new and could have had a lot of early promotion.

After implementing my suggestions, he quickly passed the 1,000 subscribers mark, which is a great achievement in any industry. Instead of having him re-brand the whole site or add a summary in the sidebar like a lot of people, we made a simple tweak. On a lot of blogs, it’s very clear what a website is about.
