The post volume varies greatly by page so I focused on the per post averages to allow for better comparison. Submitting the profile ID for a particular Google+ page generates an overview chart like this: I collected the +1, share and comment figures for a selection of 45 news organizations.

I agree too that it’s not an apples to apples comparison, but social media is certainly having a big influence on the ways that people follow team news and support their teams in general. And of course social media is not a popularity contest; it’s how you engage your followers/fans that really matters.

To take the comparison a step further, I also ran Page Speed on the top 10 sites’ lead article. One thing to note is that Page Speed scores fluctuate a little each time you run it. I double-checked several pages; some scores remained the same but others changed by 1 or 2 points.

While the methodology and accuracy can be debated the tool does offer way to make a relative comparison of various Facebook Pages, so that is all I am attempting to do. I used the default CPM just as a means to make a relative comparison between the various news organizations. The CPM can be adjusted between $1 and $25.
