When you comment on a blog post, subscribe to the comment stream so you can see if anyone posts follow-up questions. When you publish new content, monitor regularly for reactions and respond to them. When you ask a question on Twitter, respond to people who reply. Two-way interaction is here to stay.

The latest post to catch my eye was a controversial piece over at Mom Blog Magazine entitled Why PR People Get Paid And You Don’t. Over that time I’ve built this site up from a static site, that I coded by hand in Notepad, to a blog with 40,000 views each month. thanks to Jen Zingsheim for noting this in the comments).

You know what you read in blogs, in the papers, etc. People will draw that line whether you want them to or not (to take it a step further, ask the many people who have lost their jobs after ill-advised comments online). Don’t know what actually happened. Don’t know what discussions happened internally. Get me worked up.

Several people seemed to take that to mean that I think all criticism is bad, or that we should avoid commenting on other posts. Yesterday I published a post (ok, fine, a rant) about people who sling unconstructive criticism at others and the effect it has.

Blogs were still emerging. Now, I take Coleman Cox’s comments with a pinch of salt. I talked about social media earlier. When I got into that space, there were no college or university courses on it. Twitter was new. Facebook was an emerging thing. Foursquare didn’t exist yet. Don’t do that. But when you ARE working, be present.
