When I started Digital Photography School I created avatars to represent the different types of people I’d be writing for. Sounds a bit like an avatar, doesn’t it?). Some of you may remember a site called Digg, where you could post links and people would vote on them. It pretty much destroyed the community I’d created.

You have to create content, be part of many communities, and proceed incrementally. Too often we see social media strategies that involve putting photos into Flickr, videos into YouTube or the creation of a Facebook application and then never revisiting the environment to engage with the communities around this content.
