There were no search engines and directories were fairly small and specialized. We’ve become stingy with links because we want to keep our readers on our own pages, viewing our AdSense ads and buying through our affiliate links. We allow links in the comments, but we nofollow them so no link juice escapes.

The phrase is very competitive and gets around 40,000 exact searches per month in Google so I think this shows that quality content around a topic (which attracts links) is really what Google and other search engines want to provide their audience. I like to focus on building search engine traffic to my sites because once you have rankings you can usually sustain them with little effort and the traffic they send is very targeted. If you’re entering an industry with a brand new site, the last thing you want to do is wait that long for some good search engine traffic.

We have reached a point in late 2010 where the work required to generate traffic for a normal blog via search engines is much greater than that required to generate an equal amount of traffic via social media. Google can’t easily tell the difference a legitimate blog from a made for Adsense spam site.
