The surveyed group includes the magazine sites in my Pinterest traffic survey plus quite a few more that we work with at Define Media Group. But What About Nofollow? External links on Pinterest have the nofollow attribute which takes way their direct SEO value (a necessary step to combat abuse).

Google wants links in advertorials to be tagged with the nofollow attribute and the FTC requires full disclosure. Take a look at the example below. The likelihood of paid links appearing in the sections that I’ve highlighted in red below is a good example of this. I’m using Search Engine Land in the example above.

Previously, sponsored links in JavaScript such as those in the example above could not be read by crawlers and thus were in compliance with Google’s guidelines. What Horrible Things Did Time Magazine Do in 1964? Now those same links can potentially be read and pass PageRank, which means they are technically violating the rules.
