Note how I bolded a specific term: web hosting. Seek out communities that address the needs that your company also addresses.

What amazes me is that Andrew, with no idea of where this was headed, took the initiative to build an extremely successful community. It’s important to me to be an actual member of the Quizlet community, not just some executive looking down at a bunch of growth statistics. They’re Quizlet’s biggest asset.

Every time I tell someone I’m a Community Manager , I get a varied response. &# That last one might be the most honest of the three, since asking a Community Manager whether they tweet for a living is like asking a construction worker if they cat-call for a living, or a doctor if he asks people to say “ah!&# for a living.

You have to create content, be part of many communities, and proceed incrementally. Too often we see social media strategies that involve putting photos into Flickr, videos into YouTube or the creation of a Facebook application and then never revisiting the environment to engage with the communities around this content.

As a top Digg submitter, it worked like this: at first, people noticed my heavy community involvement and my participation , and consequently, my submitted stories easily front-paged. The community had to react. There’s no real community in Digg. Most other sites you belong to probably have a bigger sense of community.
