It’s certainly not unthinkable that someone will import your RSS feed into another website without ever gaining any permission to do so. Why is it that these web applications allow users to rate an article before they’re even forwarded to it? I think the big issue here is more about sites with snippets of text.

Founded by four ex-Googlers, FriendFeed allows you to subscribe to your friends’ updates across 35 social networks and to stay up to date with the content they’re discovering and sharing across the web. And I do get an RSS feed from FriendFeed for content matching my search criteria. Google, Wikipedia and FriendFeed.

You Don’t Get a Vacation In the online space, there will always be some sort of mention online that is applicable to you in some way. That’s not really convincing social proof. Then, when you’re joining a community for the first time, you’ll need to study the users and slowly build relationships with them.

Done correctly, social media is about developing meaningful relationships with customers and prospective customers in their natural habitat. You have to create content, be part of many communities, and proceed incrementally. Many successful social media programs take months (or even more than a year) to really germinate.

Regardless of the many years of experience you have in the online space, the ideas behind social media and social media marketing are applicable to everyone. Social media rocks because it’s one of the most amazing tools for “free&# market research. Let me port my RSS feed to it and be done with it!&#

But with all other social networks, there are rules of engagement that are determined by the community.
