Celebrating A Birthday – Twitter Style

This year, I got a Twitter cage, complete with a nest, eggs, perch, tweets, and LOTS and LOTS of feathers. In fact, a tradition with my team is what is often known as “cube-bombing” or “cube-wars” It’s a practice of decorating a co-worker’s cube or office in a unique way. Check out the photos.

I don’t care how long you have been on Twitter. I unfollowed you on Twitter! Do you think that announcing it on your Twitter feed is going to shame me back into following you again? That’s not how Twitter works. In fact, for me I make my living from social media and I take it very seriously.

So when Google+ launched, I jumped in again but was, again, seriously unimpressed with the “me too” nature of trying to copy Facebook, Twitter, and Skype. So when Google announced a new product called “Google + Your World” and everyone started announcing the death of Facebook and Twitter, I was naturally skeptical.

Bloggers: Would You Rather Be First Or Right?

If I just spout out statements like “Facebook announces that it’s going to buy Twitter” or “Apple is discontinuing the iPad 1 due to iOS 5 crashes”, I might generate a bunch of SEO traffic and boost my readership, but what value did I actually provide to my readers by publishing unsupported facts?

Instead, Google should be focusing on how to provide something different and interesting, instead of being just another social media “me-too” that only offers the exact same functionality of Twitter, Facebook, and Skype.
