As Tamar pointed out, it’s a social news site, not a network and I could care less about how often profiles are updated. Folks that spent considerable time on Digg prior to the update, by and large, were looking for a social news site. It’s a social site with news secondary. Is there any?

Their goal is to send press pitches, not to buy ads on your site. If a blogger outreach consultant or social media agency emails you a story pitch, read their signature. Most PR people aren’t in a position to buy ads. Excuse me, but did you bother to read the portfolio on my blog (one of the widgets in the footer)?

Many companies just see this as a new avenue to push existing traditional marketing messages, and this is why they almost always fail. For example an article with “10 Reasons You Should Buy Travel Insurance&# is almost never going to go viral, it’s not surprising, shocking, interesting or in any way sticky.

Audiences there are large, but they are there to connect, not to buy. Companies need to leverage different social media channels if they want buyers. You know, going back to my own history, Facebook [Fan Pages] and Twitter weren’t around when I started offering social media strategy.
