Setting up your listening posts and building a solid foundation can be done for free to cheap (on the software side) using tools like Google Reader, Google Alerts, Yahoo Pipes, etc. You can also use twitter based directories like twellow , wefollow , etc to find people who fall into the same categories as you. Meet them on their level.

Not unless you have a huge link-buying budget and know how to get paid links that still count. Directory Submissions By nature, directory links are of a very poor quality. Sometimes I’ll also pay $100 or so to BOTW.org which is a human-filtered directory which can give me some great link juice.

You could simply buy directory links, sponsor blog posts, and even have Wordpress themes developed which included a link to your site in the footer. The top results for most keyphrases are either a Wikipedia page, a site that is very focused around community, or a clear leader in an industry. That was it.

Comments are the life of your blogging community. I started two paid directories, one for dofollow blogs and the other for infographics. In my case, I would much rather make $25 when someone buys my eBook or $19 when someone buys a theme off of one of my affiliate links vs. get $1 for a click on an AdSense ad.

Don’t shy away from giving your community the information needed to find you elsewhere both online and offline.
